Steinmeier actually wanted to give the eulogy at the German Book Trade Peace Prize ceremony at the Paulskirche in Frankfurt this Sunday. The winner is the Indian economist, philosopher and Nobel laureate Amartya Sen. Due to the corona pandemic, Sen does not accept the award personally, but goes live from the US.

Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD) and Economy Minister Peter Altmaier (CDU) also temporarily isolated themselves at the end of September. In Maas, one of his bodyguards was also infected with the virus. Altmaier was quarantined as a precautionary measure because an employee of an EU minister who was present with him at a meeting of the EU Trade Council in Berlin had tested positive.
