After an alleged terrorist attack in a Paris suburb, the investigations are in full swing. Apparently there were first arrests during the night.

Following the beheading of a professor near Paris, police detained five more suspects on Saturday night, according to judicial sources. A total of nine people are now in custody. Four people, including a minor, were detained by the police on Friday night. They are said to belong to the family of the alleged assailant.

According to initial findings, the master was beheaded by an attacker in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, northwest of Paris. The prosecutor’s counter-terrorism investigators took over the investigation. One of the investigations is for murder with a terrorist background, said the prosecutor responsible in Paris. President Emmanuel Macron spoke on the night of a “clearly Islamist terrorist attack.”

The victim is said to have been attacked on Friday afternoon in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, northwest of Paris, on the street near a school. It appears to be about a history teacher who is said to have shown his students cartoons of Muhammad during class on the subject of freedom of expression, various media reported, citing police sources. Initially there was no official confirmation.

After the crime, the suspects allegedly attacked the police.

Police are said to have arrested the alleged perpetrator shortly after the crime in nearby Éragny-sur-Oise. According to the media, he tried to attack the agents and they shot him. As reported by the AFP news agency, citing judicial circles, the man later died. Fearing an explosive vest, the area was cordoned off and explosives experts were called in.

The attacker was an 18-year-old young man, various media reported. It is said that he screamed “Allahu akbar” (“God is great”) and was armed with a kitchen knife. Initially there was no official confirmation for this. The mayor of Éragny-sur-Oise, Thibault Humbert, spoke of an “incredibly violent” act, was there and in contact with the investigators.

French President Emmanuel Macron arrived at the scene in the evening. A crisis team was created and the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, interrupted a trip to Morocco. “Islamism is waging a war against us: we have to expel it from our country,” replied far-right politician Marine Le Pen on Twitter.

Fighting terrorism is the government’s top priority

France has been rocked by Islamist attacks for years: more than 250 people died. Therefore, people are almost always aware of the threat of terrorism. The French government has made the fight against terrorism a top priority and continues to warn that the risk of terrorist attacks is very high.

Just a few weeks ago there was a knife attack in front of the former editorial building of the satirical magazine “Charlie Hebdo” in Paris. Two people were injured; here too, investigators assume a terrorist background. At the same time, the trial of the alleged assistants of the attackers in the editorial office of “Charlie Hebdo” has been carried out in Paris since the beginning of September, in which a total of 17 people died.
