Tragic accident in Bavaria: Four workers, including a 16-year-old, were killed when a concrete roof collapsed on a construction site in Denklingen, Upper Bavaria. It is not yet clear how the accident occurred. The local mayor is shocked.

Minutes after the emergency call, rescuers, two helicopters, numerous ambulances, emergency doctors and firefighters arrive. But any help comes too late for the four workers. On Friday, a roof with formwork collapsed at a construction site in the Upper Bavarian town of Denklingen in the Landsberg am Lech district during concrete casting work. Some of the workers were buried under rubble and molten concrete.

According to the police, the dead were a 16-year-old boy, possibly an apprentice, a 34-year-old man and two 37-year-old men. Among them should be the parents.

The mayor of the city of 2,500 souls, Andreas Braunegger, was deeply concerned and shocked. In the afternoon he spoke with relatives at the town hall. The city council is also available for crisis interventions, he said. Other relatives of the victims were treated by crisis intervention forces at the scene of the accident. They wanted to say goodbye to their loved ones and therefore arrived at the scene, said police spokesman Andreas Aichele from the police headquarters in Upper Bavaria North.

Gray heaps of rubble testified to misfortune. The alert was exemplary, Aichele said. The accident occurred around 11:05 am and the emergency call was received at 11:09 am It had been a few minutes before the helpers arrived. Emergency medics tried to resuscitate two of the injured, but without success. With heavy equipment, but sometimes also with their own hands, the helpers tried to free the victims from the concrete masses.

Workers are shot down and buried

After more than an hour, the last victim was recovered. According to the police, two of the workers were standing on the roof when the formwork completely collapsed. They were ripped into the depths when they collapsed. Two more were down and spilled. Another 57-year-old worker standing nearby was struck by debris and slightly injured.

The concrete roof, for which there were already pillars, was supposed to connect an office building and another part of the building. An industrial park is emerging in the area. The managing director of electronics manufacturer Auvidea, Jürgen Stelbrink, whose company built next to the building in the accident, reported that he had just passed in front of the building and then saw the arrival of rescuers.

An attempt has also been made to clear the accident site with a crane and excavator. How the accident could have happened was left open. “The investigation is ongoing,” police said Friday afternoon. Trade inspection, trade association, appraisers and criminal investigators are on site. In the late afternoon, investigators were still taking photos of the crash site and obtaining evidence.
