Corona in kindergartens and schools: “Children are not drivers of infection”

There is currently no particular risk of infection in nurseries, as evidenced by a study presented by Minister of the Family Giffey. Schools have also not been shown to be sources of infection.

The number of infections is increasing across the country: Federal Minister for the Family, Franziska Giffey, currently sees no reason to prevent daycare centers from closing like in the spring. “Children are not sources of infection, children are not drivers of infection,” said the SPD politician.

Together with Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn, Giffey presented the interim report of an investigation in Berlin. According to the “Corona Daycare Study,” about ten percent of the daycare centers involved have had at least one suspected Corona case since mid-March. At most, one percent of the installations had to do with an actual case of infection. Less than one percent of facilities reported having to close due to infection since spring.

For the Robert Koch Institute, which is also involved in the study, 79 outbreaks had been reported at the end of September in kindergartens and after-school care centers. A total of 381 cases of Covid-19 were registered. A quarter of the sick children were under the age of five, and 64 percent, more than half were adolescents over the age of 15 who went to after-school care.

Daycare “systemically relevant”

Spahn said the research results confirm previous experiences: “She is doing very well in daycare.” Therefore, restrictions on kindergartens and schools should be “the last resort”, even in regions where the number of infections is increasing sharply, stressed the Minister of Health.

Giffey also stressed that regular operations should be maintained and that closures throughout the area “should be avoided as much as possible.” The nursery is “systemically relevant, not only for the affected children and their parents, but also for the economy. The nurseries have also adapted well to the Crown regulations.”

Schools aren’t driving the pandemic either

According to a survey by the German publishing network (RND) in the state ministries of culture, schools have also not been shown to be a source of infection. There were only relatively few corona infections and quarantine measures: This school year, an average of 98 percent of all students would have been able to participate in face-to-face classes at the start of fall break.

“Brought from abroad”

“We made the observation that there is no increase or, compared to the rest of society, an increase in the infection rate in schools or nurseries,” Saarland Education Minister Christine Streichert-Clivot told the RND. “Infections occur predominantly outside of schools and kindergartens and are brought in from outside,” said the SPD politician.

Hamburg virologist Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit had a similar idea two weeks ago daily topics voiced. “Everything indicates that schools and nurseries are not the main sources of infection,” he said. “This is very good news and confirms the measures we have taken.”
