A jury selected the top ten, largely on the basis of the criteria “degree of dissemination of the word”, “originality” and “social and cultural events”. Unlike in previous years, the choice of the winner and the first three was left to the users.

With the greatest participation from the community, the editorial team wanted to counter criticism that many youthful words in recent years, such as “Niveaulimbo” or “bugged”, had nothing to do with the current language of adolescents. It remains to be seen, however, how many of this year’s voters were really young, and how many less-than-cool adults mingled with the election. The choice of the word juvenile is a campaign by Langenscheidt Verlag for its dictionary on juvenile language that will appear later.

Now we no longer want you to continue torturing, the youth word 2020 is: “lost”.
