In the course of protests against the controversial widening of Autobahn 49 in Central Hesse, several people were seriously injured in an accident on the A3 southbound. Police announced on Twitter.

In the morning, environmentalists descended from a bridge over the A3 near the city of Idstein to demonstrate against the expansion of the A49. Officers then blocked the A3 in both directions between Idstein and Bad Camberg.

Thousands of traffic jams formed in both directions. According to the police, a serious accident occurred at the end of a traffic jam. Officials did not release details.

The police had tried in recent days to evacuate the Dannenröder forest, which was occupied by environmental activists, and Herrenwald. There were repeated violent clashes between protesters and security forces.

Trees from occupied areas will be cut down for the subsequent construction of the A49. Environmentalists criticize, however, that this would destroy an intact, species-rich mixed forest with oak and beech trees more than 250 years old.

In addition, the highway endangers the water supply for hundreds of thousands of people. The region around the Herrenwald and Dannenröder forest is therefore one of the most important drinking water reservoirs in Hesse.
