The Robert Koch Institute assumes that a corona vaccine will likely be available next year, but only to a limited extent. Therefore, people would have to keep waiting for measures such as wearing masks.

reAccording to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), daily life in Germany must initially remain restricted even with the introduction of a corona vaccine, including the use of masks and distance requirements. The RKI noted this in a strategy paper published on Tuesday.

Based on this, one or more vaccines will likely be available next year, significantly improving the fight against coronavirus. However, such a remedy should only be available in limited quantities at first, and in particular benefit risk groups.

That is why “certain modifications of being together” are still important. The RKI understands that this includes keeping your distance, observing hygiene rules, wearing a mask, ventilating, and relocating outdoor leisure activities if possible.

Two months ago a similar article was published in which the earliest availability of a vaccine was considered possible. The RKI withdrew this document a few hours later because it was an outdated version.

In the document now presented, the RKI formulates strategic objectives: the focus is on minimizing the spread and health effects of the pandemic, while social and economic life should be affected as little as possible. “In dealing with Covid-19, we need limited measures temporarily and regionally in the coming weeks and months that are tailored to the respective risk,” said RKI President Lothar Wieler. The overload of the health system, the long-term effects of disease and deaths should be avoided as much as possible, according to the document.

The RKI also deals with schools and kindergartens: previous findings clearly showed that “educational institutions are one of the places that have a role in the infection process.” However, it is important to keep them open by following hygiene concepts.

Individual risk of dying from Covid-19 depends on several factors

Regarding travel, the RKI writes: “Greater mobility (business or private travel) means greater risk.” However, the risk does not depend mainly on the location of the trip, but rather on the behavior of the person in an area with transmission of the virus.

RKI advocates vaccinating high-risk groups against influenza and pneumococci. “Vaccines against other respiratory diseases will play a decisive role in controlling the pandemic in the coming months, especially in the cold season.” This could protect people and ease the healthcare system.
