Before Donald Trump became vulnerable, he tagged entire countries as shit, tagged Mexicans as rapists, and in his Twitter storms he indiscriminately insulted television presenters, actors, athletes and officials. He has demanded the removal of deputies, insulted the senators, attacked the judiciary, mocked science, imitated people with disabilities, and stained the memory of fallen soldiers. It hasn’t hurt much in a long time.
Before Donald Trump’s power began to crumble, he aggressively undermined the constitutional right to freedom of the press and freedom of expression, sowed mistrust of facts, and lost all opportunities to spread divisive propaganda. He described the neo-Nazis in Charlottesville as “good people” and, in a television duel with his Democratic challenger Joe Biden in front of 70 million viewers, he sent a salute to the racist “Proud Boys” movement. He has threatened critics and opponents with putting them in jail, and recently commented, without reason or evidence, that the postal vote opens the door to electoral fraud. It hasn’t hurt him in all these years.
