Spahn on new infections: “The numbers worry me a lot”

For the first time since peak crown in spring, the RKI reported more than 4,000 new infections. A cause for concern for the Federal Minister of Health, Spahn. He urged people to obey the rules.

Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) has cautioned against caution in light of the current jump to more than 4,000 new corona infections in one day. “You worry me a lot,” he said, looking at those numbers.

Younger people in particular were infected. They were often considered inviolable: “But they are not.” Even if the number of deaths and intensive care patients is currently comparatively low, it is still a serious disease.

Germany has “weathered the crisis well so far,” Spahn said. “We can be pretty sure.” “Almost no country in Europe has managed the crisis so well so far.” Now “it depends on everyone if we can assure what we have achieved,” said the minister. The most effective is still to observe the rules of hygiene and distance.

4058 reported cases

RKI chief Lothar Wieler warned of the uncontrolled spread of the corona virus in Germany. It is “possible that we can see more than 10,000 new cases a day,” he said.

The RKI had previously reported 4,058 new corona infections in the previous 24 hours. That’s more than 1,200 more cases than on Wednesday, when 2,828 new infections were reported, a new record since April. A value higher than that now reported was last reached in early April.

According to the RKI, at least 310,144 people in Germany have been shown to have been infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus since the beginning of the Corona crisis (data as of October 8 at 12:00 am). According to the RKI, the number of deaths related to a corona infection is 9578. That is 16 more than the day before. About 269,600 people survived the infection according to RKI estimates.

The positive test rate rose sharply to 1.64 percent during the week of September 28-October 2. The week before it was 1.22 percent and before that 1.16 percent.

Countries toughen measures

In response to the growing number of cases, most federal states decided Wednesday that tourists from Germany from risk areas can only be accommodated if they can show a negative corona test that is no more than 48 hours old. This should work for travelers from areas with more than 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days.

However, five countries made different statements about the decision. Thuringia made it clear that it doesn’t want to endorse a lodging ban – at least Berlin doesn’t want to get on board right away. Lower Saxony and Bremen want to check it out. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania wants to adhere to even stricter quarantine rules.

Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) defended the joint ARD and ZD Morning MagazineF the prohibition of accommodation. The main concern is the safety of people for the tourism industry.

Some big cities are on the verge of losing control of the corona infection numbers. Therefore, caution should not be waived under any circumstances. “More mask, less alcohol and, of course, smaller parties” are the appropriate measures for a greater number of infections.
