Ulm: the community wants to remove the three kings from the nativity scene

The Protestant community of Münster in Ulm wants to remove the Magi from their nativity scene. All three figures, including black-skinned Melchior, should not be shown this year, Dean Ernst-Wilhelm Gohl said. The “Südwest Presse” reported on this first.

The community is responding to the ongoing debate on racism in Germany.

“The wooden figure of Melchior, for example, with his thick lips and deformed stature, must clearly be seen as racist from today’s perspective,” Gohl said. The community cannot and does not want to leave this situation. Instead, the Christmas story according to Lucas will be told this year, in which the three wise men do not appear.

With this decision, the community would like to anticipate a possible discussion during the holidays. Christmas this year should not be determined by a debate over the manger figures.

The community wants to make a final decision on how to deal with the Melchior figure “easy” in the New Year, Gohl said.
