Mathenia avoids fast equalization

After two minutes, the fans of the hosts could cheer for the first time. Felix Lohkemper started on the right flank, crossed perfectly to the center, where Robin Hack from the left half with a diving header gave the club the early lead. Darmstadt wanted to give the answer immediately, but first Tim Skarke missed with his long-distance shot to Nuremberg goalkeeper Christian Mathenia, then Tobias Kempe chased the second attempt over the door.

Developed a fast, interesting and distributed game. After an error by Fabian Nürnberger, Kempe equalized again, but Mathenia was back in place with a good flying insertion (21st).

Dursun misses his head

Mathenia also had to intervene spectacularly ten minutes later – brilliantly brought in a well-placed header from Serdar Dursun, who finally stayed in Darmstadt after numerous transfer rumors, from the right angle.

Dursun remained dangerous, and Mathenia was unable to do anything on his next attempt in the 43rd minute. However, the right post saved the clubberers when the Darmstadt striker fired, making the narrow and at that time long and happy lead lasted until the break.

Compensation with a long start-up

But Darmstadt was vigilant and rewarded himself. In the 55th minute, Dursun’s shot from the right half was blocked by a heel, but after the next corner the moment came: with his back to the goal, Dursun maneuvered the ball over the line with the back of his neck to equalize.

The 1: 1 was more than deserved, but it only lasted five minutes. With practically the first serious attack of the second half, Felix Lohkemper served from the left wing into the middle after a long pass from Johannes Geis and sent the ball into the right corner with outstanding shooting technique.

Mehlem hits with a low shot

Then Nuremberg suddenly put his hat back on this strange game, but missed the decisive blow. As surprising as the club took its 2-1 lead earlier, Darmstadt tied again: Marvin Mehlem hit a low shot from twelve meters to the left inside post and from there to 2-2 at the net.

As a result, both teams took chances over and over again, the will to win outweighing securing a point. But Hanno Behrens on the Nuremberg side and Tobias Kempe on the Darmstadt side each awarded their match balls. When both teams seemed satisfied with the points split, Rapp led the guests after Kempe’s free kick to his first win of the season.

Nuremberg again on Monday

After the international break, Nuremberg has the next main match on Monday (October 19, 2020) at FC St. Pauli. The lilies compete the day before at VfL Osnabrück.
