An apparently anti-Semitic attack broke out in front of the Hamburg synagogue on Sunday afternoon. According to information from Süddeutscher Zeitung, NDR and WDR, a man dressed in military clothing attacked a Jewish student there. The perpetrator is said to have struck the student with a shovel and injured him before the security forces of the Jewish community could overpower him, arrest him and bring the many visitors to the synagogue to safety.

Both the military clothing and the date of the attack remind us of the attack on the Halle an der Saale synagogue almost a year ago. There, on the most important Jewish holiday, Yom Kippur, a heavily armed right-wing radical tried to break into the synagogue and murder those who were praying. Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles, was celebrated this Sunday, which immediately follows Yom Kippur on the Jewish calendar.

The victim is said to have been taken to hospital with a major head injury.
