Parts of the Netherlands and Great Britain: RKI identifies new risk areas

Other provinces in the Netherlands, Scotland and northern England are now among the corona risk areas. The federal government issued a travel advisory. Schleswig-Holstein sends travelers from Berlin-Mitte to quarantine.

The federal government has declared Scotland, northern England and other parts of the Netherlands to be corona risk areas. In the Netherlands, the entire country, except for the provinces of Zeeland and Limburg, will now be classified accordingly, the Robert Koch Institute announced. In Great Britain, in addition to Scotland, the North West, North East and Yorkshire and the Humber regions of England are also affected. The Foreign Ministry issued travel advisories for the regions and discourages tourist visits.

It is crucial for the classification as a risk area that the number of new infections in seven days is greater than 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. As a result, returnees have to submit a negative corona test when entering Germany or entering home quarantine for two weeks. A new quarantine regulation will apply from mid-October, the details of which have yet to be determined.

There aren’t many European countries without corona risk anymore

Travel advisories do not mean a travel ban, but they should have the greatest possible deterrent effect on tourists. Tourists can cancel a trip that has already been booked if they are advised of their destination.

The bottom line is that there are only twelve European countries left for which travel is neither advised nor discouraged: Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Malta, Poland, Sweden, Georgia, Liechtenstein, San Marino, Monaco and the Vatican.

Exceptional rule for Austrian enclaves

According to the RKI, the Austrian Kleinwalsertal and the community of Jungholz no longer count as corona risk areas. The enclaves, which can only be reached from Bavaria, have not reported a single new corona infection in recent days. Therefore, an online petition with more than 10,500 supporters called for exception rules.

The federal government’s decision is a first. So far, only entire federal states or provinces have been evaluated. No exception has been made for individual communities or valleys.

Schleswig-Holstein declares Berlin-Mitte risk zone

There are also corona hotspots within Germany – these include Berlin’s Mitte district, which currently reports a value of 59.6 infections per 100,000 inhabitants in a week. Therefore, the state of Schleswig-Holstein classified Berlin-Mitte as a risk zone.

That could frustrate the plans of some Berliners for their holidays in the North and Baltic Seas and of some Schleswig-Holsteiners their trip to the capital with a view to the next autumn holidays. Because now the common rules of quarantine and testing will apply to them, as a spokesman for the Ministry of Health in Kiel said.
