Reactions to Trump’s infection: “The virus does not spare anyone”

Lots of good wishes, but also teasing and restless financial markets: Reactions to the infection of Trump’s crown are diverse. One thing is certain: the news, shortly before the US elections, will change the electoral campaign.

Just before 1 a.m. local time, US President Trump tweeted: He and his wife Melania tested positive for the corona virus. The news is making waves, first on Twitter and then on all other channels.

Britain empathizes

Solidarity wishes for recovery came directly from Britain, whose prime minister, Boris Johnson, was infected with the corona virus in March and had to be treated in the intensive care unit. “We all want to send our best wishes to President Trump, the first lady and the Trump family and wish them a speedy recovery,” the British government said. “We know what it’s like to have a prime minister who tested positive for Covid.” British Cabinet member Robert Jenrick noted “very clear protocol” in the United States regarding the vice president, “if necessary.”

He also spoke in the morning. US Vice President Mike Pence also wished Trump a speedy recovery. “Karen and I send our love and prayers to our dear friends, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump,” Pence wrote on Twitter on behalf of his wife Karen. “We join the millions across America who are praying for a speedy and full recovery. God bless you, President Trump and our wonderful First Lady Melania,” Pence wrote.

Recovery wishes on a strict note

EU Council President Charles Michel also sent good wishes, adding: “Covid-19 is a fight we all fight. Every day. No matter where we live.”

Looking ahead to Trump’s initially relaxed approach to the pandemic, French government spokesman Gabriel Attal said: “This shows that the virus spares no one, not even those who have been skeptical.” He wishes Trump a speedy recovery, Attal said.

A reaction has already come from China, blamed by Trump for the spread of the virus. The Chinese state newspaper “China Daily” called the positive test from the US president as another reminder that the virus was spreading “even as Trump desperately tried to suggest that he was no longer a threat.” Trump, his campaign team and the US presidential office had “downplayed the danger and refused to follow basic public health guidelines,” the English-language newspaper said.

Oil and dax prices are falling

The global reaction to the Trump infection was also directly reflected in financial markets. Investors in the German stock market reacted with concern to the news that the Dax fell in the first minutes of trading. Analysts warned that the effects on US policy, especially in the negotiations for the next Crown stimulus package, as well as the US election campaign, could be immense. The price of oil also fell in the commodity market.

Change of plan in the electoral campaign

The effects on the US election campaign can already be seen today. Trump would have actually traveled to Florida today, but the White House has since issued a new schedule for the President of the United States that no longer includes a trip to Florida. Trump’s Democratic opponent Joe Biden, who appeared in the televised debate with the President of the United States this week, will promote today in Michigan. Both Florida and Michigan are the so-called swing states that could decide on American elections.

Trump, who had previously held regular rallies across the country and also mocked his opponent Biden for his caution, will be quarantined for at least two weeks. Now a virtual election campaign from the Republicans is also expected, as the Democrats have been waging for a long time. Trump had previously smiled at Biden for this, but now Trump will no longer be an active activist in the coming weeks.

Trump: “I don’t wear masks like him”

It remains to be seen whether the US President’s corona infection will lead to a rethinking of the fight against coronavirus. In Tuesday’s television debate, Trump pulled a mask from his pocket and said, “I wear masks when necessary. I wear masks when necessary.” He then told Biden, who wears them regularly, “I don’t wear masks like him. Every time you see him he has a mask. He could talk 200 feet from you and he shows up with the largest mask, I have ever seen.
