In OB’s election, incumbent Pit Clausen got a respectable 39.65 percent on the first ballot. It is around ten percentage points ahead of Ralf Nettelstroth (CDU). But in the second round it starts again at 0. The SPD depends on the support of the Greens, whose candidate Kerstin Haarmann could only get 12.45 percent.

Pit Clausen (SPD): The incumbent mayor wants to be elected for his third term. Clausen came to Bielefeld to study law in 1982 and has been a member of the Statute Council since 1994. Prior to his full-time political career, he was a judge in various labor courts in North Rhine-Westphalia. The 58-year-old has also been Chairman of the NRW City Council since 2016. He lives in a registered civil partnership with Thomas Sopp.

Ralf Nettelstroth (CDU): The 56-year-old was born in Bielefeld, grew up there and also studied law here. Like Clausen, he was elected to the city council for the first time in 1994. Since 2011 he has been president of the Christian Democrats. From 2012 to 2017 he moved to the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia via the CDU state list and was a local political spokesperson there. Nettelstroth has two daughters with his wife Ute.
