Barrett is one of the “brightest and most talented” legal experts in America, Trump said Saturday when announcing his nomination in the White House rose garden. The attorney is “very well qualified.”
After Trump, Barrett was allowed to give a short speech. “I love America and I love the Constitution of the United States,” said the 48-year-old. She is “deeply honored” by the nomination. He will remember his late predecessor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg. “It has won the admiration of women across the country and the world.”
Barrett promised to be a judge inspired by the late Justice Antonin Scalia. Scalia was a conservative, but also a friend of Ginsburg. “Her legal philosophy is mine too: A judge must apply the law as it is written. Judges are not legislators,” Barrett said.
Ginsburg was considered an icon of the liberals. With Barrett, conservative justices would now have a majority of six of the nine Supreme Court seats, which could change American society forever.
Barrett must be elected to the Supreme Court
The US Supreme Court often has the final say on policy issues related to issues such as abortion, immigration, gun rights, and discrimination. It is considered likely that American conservatives could make a new attempt to revoke, or at least limit, the right to abortion and same-sex marriage in court.
Barrett, 48, has already been traded as the most promising of several candidates in recent days. He has been a judge in an appeals court since 2017. The Catholic is considered an anti-abortionist. This makes his candidacy attractive to arch-conservative circles, while liberals were already concerned in 2017. At the Senate hearing for his current position, Barrett said he was guided only by the law, not his beliefs.
The judges of the Supreme Court are appointed for life. They are proposed by the president and approved by the Senate. Republicans have a majority of 53 of the 100 seats in the House. Trump aims to fill Ginsburg’s job before the November 3 presidential election. According to media reports, Barrett’s first hearing is scheduled for October 12.
