FC Augsburg surprises BVB and is leader of the table

BVB made a fool of itself in Augsburg. The Dortmunders lacked ideas against a compact FCA. The Favre-Elf hardly played chances and, in the end, deservedly lost.

FC Augsburg surprised on matchday two. The Suevi defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-0. Felix Udokhai gave FCA the lead in the first half (40th minute), while newcomer Daniel Caligiuri scored 2-0 shortly after the break (54th).

Haaland sees yellow after a push

In the first half, BVB was clearly the dominant team with 80 percent possession and 8-1 shots on target. But FC Augsburg reduced the space and defended compactly, and in turn became dangerous. FCA forward Florian Niederlechner was able to start dangerously twice, but the referee whistled him offside (11, 24).

After half an hour it got hot. Augsburg’s Khedira fouled Bellingham, while BVB striker Erling Haaland pushed Jeffrey Gouweleeuw, leading to a pack of four yellow cards.

Shortly before halftime, the Augsburgers increasingly looked for their opportunities and finally took the lead five minutes before halftime. After a Daniel Caligiuri free kick, Felix Uduokhai headed his team before the break up front (40th).

Caliguiri seals the defeat of Dortmund

BVB had to come now, but even after the break, there was little to see from Dortmund. But Borussia also lost their dominance. Instead, the FCA quickly changed and got BVB into trouble early on: Niederlechner deftly passed Caliguiri, who pushed the ball over BVB goalkeeper Roman Bürki and increased it to 2-0.

Coach Favre now had to react and brought in international players Julian Brandt and Marco Reus for Raphael Guerreiro and Jude Bellingham. But the changes failed, both could no longer give a decisive impulse.
Instead, Augsburg pushed for 3-0 but negligently squandered their chances.

In the final phase, Dortmund reappeared, but could not turn their chances into goals. The unexpected defeat costs BVB important points in the championship. FC Bayern can already walk away by three points at Hoffenheim tomorrow.
