Senate staff lockdown deemed unlikely

After the death of liberal Justice Ginsburg, Democrats fear a shift to the right on the Supreme Court and thus potentially in American society at large. They demand that the appointment be postponed until after the presidential election on November 3. Republicans have a majority in the Senate, which must approve the nomination. According to the dpa news agency, there currently does not appear to be a lockdown there.

The judges of the Supreme Court are appointed for life. Thus, Trump could build a clear conservative majority there for many years. During his tenure, he has already filled two other vacant positions with candidates of his choice.

Barrett was nominated by Trump in 2017 for a position on the federal appeals court in Chicago.
