Eva Lanzerath from the Rhineland-Palatinate wine region of Ahr has been elected 72nd German Wine Queen. In the final in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, the 22-year-old beat six competitors.

Above all, candidates had to demonstrate specialized knowledge, sharpness and charm. Teacher student Eva Lanzerath from Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler succeeds Angelina Vogt (Nahe growing area). The crown remains in Rhineland-Palatinate.

His two wine princesses also come from Rhineland-Palatinate: Anna-Maria Löffler from Haßloch (Palatinate) and Eva Müller from Wöllstein in Rheinhessen.

Final in crown conditions

The election was held in difficult conditions due to the corona pandemic and was broadcast live from the Neustadt hall. Instead of the usual 13 regional wine queens, only seven competed with each other, because a new queen was not chosen this year in six wine regions. The event unfolded without an audience due to the crown. Aside from the roughly 70-member jury, only a few relatives of the applicants were allowed in.

Some reigns have been extended

This year, the candidates from the seven growing regions Ahr, Mosel, Pfalz, Rheinhessen (all Rhineland-Palatinate), Hessische Bergstrasse and Rheingau (both Hesse), as well as Württemberg, were present. The remaining six growing areas did not send a candidate: in Baden, Franconia, Middle Rhine, Nahe and Saale-Unstrut and Saxony, the reign of the reigning regional wine queen was extended by a year due to the crown.

Representatives from Germany’s producing regions compete in this competition every year since 1949. German Wine Queen is the industry’s most important ambassador, representing some 16,000 German winegrowers at around 200 appointments during a year, many of them abroad. .

Former wine queen Klöckner congratulates

The chairwoman of the CDU state of Rhineland-Palatinate, Julia Klöckner, and the leader of the CDU state parliamentary group, Christian Baldauf, congratulated Lanzerath. “We are pleased that another representative of a cultivation area in Rhineland-Palatinate has won the crown,” the two politicians said. The German Wine Queen is “the most important ambassador of the German wine industry at home and abroad,” said Klöckner, who was crowned the German Wine Queen 25 years ago.
