At least two people were injured in a knife attack at noon in central Paris. According to information from “Spiegel”, the victims are said to be employees of the press agency “Premières Lignes”, which is based in the same building as “Charlie Hebdo”. Consequently, the two employees took a cigarette break in the late morning and the attack took place shortly after.

A suspect was arrested near the Place de la Bastille, near the crime scene, according to police. As unanimously reported by several French media, a second arrest occurred shortly after in the area of ​​the Richard-Lenoir metro station, also near the crime scene.

The Paris counter-terrorism prosecutor dropped the case. According to his own statements, he initiated investigations for “attempted murder in connection with a terrorist act” and “formation of a terrorist group”.

Call an emergency meeting

Emergency services cordoned off the area around the crime scene in District 11, special forces are on duty. According to the police, a suspicious package was also seized. All kindergartens, schools and nursing homes have been cordoned off and people are not supposed to leave their homes.

French Prime Minister Jean Castex interrupted a visit to a Paris suburb to follow the events of the Interior Ministry. According to him, an emergency meeting was called at the ministry.

Unclear background

The crime scene is close to the old newsroom of the satirical magazine “Charlie Hebdo”, which was the target of a terrorist attack in 2015. Since the beginning of September a trial has been taking place in Paris against those responsible for the attack. “Charlie Hebdo” had republished the Muhammad cartoons this time. The Islamic State terrorist organization later threatened to retaliate. The murderer’s widows were to testify in the afternoon. It is unclear if there is a possible connection.
