Hanau: alleged leader of a sect sentenced to life imprisonment for the death of a four-year-old boy

More than 30 years after the death of a child, the Hanau District Court convicted an alleged leader of a cult of murder. He imposed a life sentence on the woman.

The court followed the prosecutor’s request. He accused the 73-year-old woman of not having killed the then four-year-old. The defense requested acquittal in the process. She sees a “smear campaign from alleged sect defectors.”

According to the indictment, the woman had tied the boy in a burlap sack in August 1988 and put him in a bathroom. The boy passed out and choked on vomit. The researchers considered the boy’s death an accident for many years. It was not until 2015 that the investigations after the evidence were restarted.

The prosecution sees the reason that the 73-year-old woman wanted to strengthen her position of power through the death of the child. She described the boy as “possessed by evil”. After death, he feigned the intuition that God had brought the child: the child was Hitler’s rebirth.

Witnesses denounced in the process that began in October the strict regiment of 73 years and the suffering of the boy and other children. Companions and defectors reported mental cruelty, brainwashing, psychological and physical violence in the Hanau group.

The defendant was supported by the mother of the dead child. He said the former nurse was affectionate with children. “She is like a sister and a good friend to me,” said the witness at the trial. The accused could only be convicted of murder; all other criminal offenses would have been prescribed by law.
