Apparently, the French government had recently received a request for legal assistance from the Russian authorities. The Foreign Ministry announced in Paris that the application was being examined.
The French government’s priority, however, is for Moscow to clarify “the circumstances and responsibilities behind the assassination attempt” on Navalny, which was carried out on Russian territory, emphasized a ministry spokesperson.
Laboratories in France and Sweden had confirmed the findings of a special Bundeswehr laboratory, according to which the prominent critic of Russian head of state Vladimir Putin was “undoubtedly” poisoned with a Novichok group chemical nerve agent. The substance was developed in the former Soviet Union.
Moscow vehemently rejects the suspicion that Russian government agencies may have deliberately poisoned Navalny.
Speculation on phone call with Macron
According to a newspaper report, Russian President Vladimir Putin has even played a possible self-poisoning of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny. “Le Monde” reports that in a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron, Putin suggested that Navalny may have self-administered the neurotoxin Novichok.
During the telephone conversation with Macron on September 14, Putin put forward several theses on how the Navalny poisoning could have occurred without interference from the Russian authorities. In addition to self-poisoning, he referred to a possible connection to Latvia, where the neurotoxin maker Novichok lives. Macron rejected these assumptions after the “Le Monde” information was decided.
