Russian special forces have arrested a leader of a Siberian sect who claims to be a rebirth of Jesus. According to the prosecution, Sergei Torop, aka Vissarion, 59, was arrested with two assistants in a remote settlement in the Siberian region of Krasnoyarsk. Investigators accuse the self-proclaimed Messiah of having financially excluded his followers and mentally abused.
Members of the sect died in settlements
Former traffic cop Torop, in his own words, experienced a “revival” after the collapse of the Soviet Union. In 1991 he founded a sect called the Church of the Last Testament.
It has thousands of followers who live in remote settlements in Siberia. In the 1990s, several members of the sect died as a result of suicide or as a result of the harsh living conditions and lack of medical care in their settlements.
