Only nine percent of Germans trust the SPD to have competent crisis management. Internal disputes also cast doubt among potential voters. Even SPD supporters don’t like their party at the moment.

reAccording to a poll, the SPD currently has little chance of benefiting from the popularity of its chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz. In an Allensbach poll on behalf of the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” (Wednesday edition), only nine percent of respondents rate the SPD as competent to lead the country through a crisis like the current one. 54 percent of respondents believe the CDU / CSU can do this.

According to the poll, there are several reasons why the party held values around 17 percent even after Scholz was nominated in August. Only 23 percent of those polled believe that Scholz has the support of his party, while 48 percent doubt it.

Even among SPD supporters, about a third are unsure whether the candidate for chancellor has the necessary support in his own party. Although the SPD is not as divided as it was last year, according to the survey, only 15 percent of those surveyed believe it is a unique political force.

Never before in the Allensbach poll such a small proportion of German citizens said they liked the SPD: only 13 percent of those polled agreed with this statement, while 59 percent said otherwise. Even of SPD supporters, just under half (47 percent) say they currently really like the party.

The share of those who would prefer to see a federal government led by the SPD is correspondingly low: it has fallen from 28 percent to 18 percent since 2017.
