US President Trump wants to propose a successor to the late Judge Ginsburg this week. There are four to five candidates on the short list. Democrats are calling for the US elections to be expected in November.
US President Donald Trump wants to announce his Supreme Court nominee on Friday or Saturday. He currently has four or five attorneys on the short list, Trump said in an interview with Fox News. Out of respect for Ruth Bader Ginsburg, he wanted to announce his decision only after the funeral.
Conservative majority for decades?
United States Supreme Justice Ginsburg, considered a liberal, died on Friday at the age of 87. Trump faces his third nomination to the Supreme Court and his members remain in office until the end of their lives. Trump’s new nomination should cement the majority of conservatives in court at six to three.
However, the candidate must be confirmed by the responsible congressional committees. Some Republicans have already indicated that they would be unlucky if they were nominated for the Supreme Court shortly before the presidential election. Trump rejected this: “The vote must take place before the elections and we have a lot of time for it.”
Biden appeals to Republicans
Earlier, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden appealed to Republicans not to approve the new appointment before the November presidential election. “Please follow your conscience! Do not vote for someone nominated in these circumstances.” Filling the vacant position amounts to an “abuse of power” and an act of “raw political power.”
Some Republicans have already indicated that they will not agree to a fast-track judgment. After Republican Senator Susan Collins, who represents the US state of Maine in the Senate, her party colleague and Senator from Alaska, Lisa Murkowski, spoke out against a poll before the November 3 election. Other Republican skeptics include former presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Chuck Grassley. The justices of the Supreme Court must be approved by the Senate. Trump’s Republicans currently have 53 out of 100 seats.
Term of office until the end of life
The occupation of the Supreme Court is politically explosive in the United States. Due to the strong polarization of the country, the Supreme Court often has the last word on key issues ranging from abortion to gun ownership to the death penalty. With judges, presidents can still shape politics decades after their tenure.
