Union Ver.di: warning of strikes in the public sector starting Tuesday

People in Germany are facing new warning strikes in the public service. The first regional activities will begin on Tuesday, as the Ver.di union in Potsdam announced on Sunday. Where and in which industries the strike won’t be clear until early this week, according to Ver.di.

Parents of daycare children should also prepare for warning strikes. Outstanding claims are possible in daycare centers, it was said in bargaining circles. Since these are warning strikes, it is to be expected that educators will not stop their work for more than a day or two.

“Public employers have locked themselves in two rounds,” said Ver.di boss Frank Werneke. There were no signs of respect or appreciation for the employees. “This means that warning strikes are inevitable,” said the union leader. Werneke accused the employer of failing to submit an offer.

The negotiating parties are still widely separated on key points. Werneke called it “scandalous” that the east-west harmonization of working hours demanded by the unions is not implemented until 2025. The Ver.di boss also rejected a new collective agreement that the municipalities are targeting until 2023. The unions demand a one year term. “Employers are aggravating the conflict. The answer will now come from the companies,” Werneke said.

The director of the German Association of Civil Servants dbb, Ulrich Silberbach, had not previously ruled out warning strikes in nurseries and care centers. “We’re not going to get anywhere like this,” Silberbach said. “Warnings are not excluded.” In order not to end up in arbitration, unions would have to increase pressure on employers in the coming weeks.

Unions are demanding 4.8 percent more wages. Employees will be guaranteed at least 150 euros more per month. They demand a term of twelve months, the municipal entrepreneurs want a longer term. The municipalities have nothing to distribute due to the crisis in the crown, they argue.

The government and municipalities negotiate directly for 2.3 million employees. According to the unions, the result should be passed on to the more than 200,000 officials. The third round of negotiations is scheduled for October 22 and 23.

Post office employees had previously announced nationwide warning strikes to increase pressure on employers in ongoing collective bargaining. The union Ver.di, for example, asked about 1,400 workers from Berlin and Brandenburg to take part in the strike.
