Public service dispute: Verdi announces first strikes for Tuesday

Negotiations between Verdi and the employers again fail to achieve a breakthrough. Now the union has announced the first regional strikes for the beginning of the week. It could affect, once again, families with children. Because outstanding debts in nurseries are quite possible.

People in Germany are facing new warning strikes in the public service. The first highlights in individual regions start this Tuesday, as announced by the Verdi union in Potsdam. Where and in which industries the strike will only become clear at the beginning of the week, according to Verdi. Parents of daycare children should also prepare for warning strikes. Outstanding claims in nurseries are possible, it was said in bargaining circles from another side. Since these are warning strikes, it is to be expected that teachers will not stop their work for more than a day or two.

“Public employers have locked themselves in two rounds,” Verdi boss Frank Werneke said, according to a statement. There were no signs of respect or appreciation for the employees. “This makes warning strikes unavoidable,” the union leader said. Werneke accused the employer of failing to submit an offer. The negotiating parties are still widely separated on key points. Werneke called it “scandalous” that the east-west harmonization of working hours demanded by the unions is not implemented until 2025.

The Verdi boss also rejected the validity of a new collective agreement that the municipalities are aiming at until 2023. The unions demand a one-year term. “Employers are aggravating the conflict. The answer will now come from the companies,” Werneke said. Even the director of the dbb civil servants association, Ulrich Silberbach, had not ruled out warning strikes, for example, in daycare centers and care centers.

Unions are demanding 4.8 percent more wages. Employees will be guaranteed at least 150 euros more per month. They demand a term of twelve months, the municipal entrepreneurs want a longer term. The municipalities have nothing to distribute due to the crisis in the Crown, they argue. The government and municipalities negotiate directly for 2.3 million employees. According to the unions, the result should be passed on to the more than 200,000 officials. The third round of negotiations is scheduled for October 22 and 23.
