Philipp Hofmann stood in a bright yellow training bib with the other reservists behind the corner flag and watched as his colleagues on the pitch fought in vain to regain the gap against Hannover 96. They could have used someone like him, who last season he had put a row of crosses into the goal from outside. But Hofmann had preferred to appear only as a spectator in the first match of the second division at the HDI Arena, which Karlsruher SC lost 0: 2 (0: 1) in the end.

The night before the game, he had informed head coach Christian Eichner and sporting director Oliver Kreuzer that he did not feel capable of running.
