This is how Germans think about accepting refugees

After the Moria refugee camp caught fire, there was a discussion about accepting people. According to polls, Germans feel they have a duty, but many have a condition.

According to a survey, almost two-thirds of Germans expect an increase in the number of refugees in Europe if Germany welcomes a higher proportion of the homeless immigrants from the burning Greek camp of Moria. 62 percent expected a corresponding scenario. That comes from Thursday’s current ZDF Politbarometer. A good third of those surveyed do not believe in these consequences.

Refugee admission has been debated since a major fire in the Lesbos camp last week. 43 percent of respondents to the ZDF Politbarometer were clearly in favor of accepting a higher proportion of refugees from Moria. 46 percent said Germany should only do this if other EU countries are also participating. Almost one in ten people spoke out against accepting the refugees.

The German ARD “Morgenmagazin” trend reaches a similar result. 43 percent of those eligible to vote think that Germany should definitely accept immigrants from Moria. 44 percent are in favor of this only on condition of a distribution at the European level to the EU states. The survey conducted by the Infratest Dimap institute also showed a general rejection of additional admission for every ten respondents.

About 13,000 people were left homeless after a fire

Camp Moria was largely destroyed last week. Around 13,000 people, as of now without a place to stay. Since then, eleven European countries have agreed to accept some 400 unaccompanied minors. The federal government also wants to participate in the reception of 1,553 refugees from the Greek camps. Berlin is largely isolated in the EU with its plan to host 408 families. The Greek government insists that the destruction of the Moria refugee camp should not be rewarded with the acceptance of arsonists in other European countries. She urges those seeking protection to move to a new tent camp on Lesbos.

According to ZDF, 1,241 randomly selected voters were interviewed by phone for the Politbarometer poll. The survey is representative of the eligible population in Germany. The range of error is around three percentage points for a 40 percent stake and two percentage points for a 10 percent stake.

For the “Deutschlandtrend”, which will air on Friday on the ARD “Morgenmagazin”, the opinion research institute Infratest dimap asked 1,051 voters in Germany on Tuesday and Wednesday. The margin of error is 1.4 with a ratio of five percent and up to 3.1 with a value of 50 percent.
