meIn one day, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), German health authorities reported 2,194 new corona infections and three deaths early Thursday morning. Since the beginning of the Corona crisis, at least 265,857 people in Germany have been shown to have been infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus. According to the RKI, the number of deaths related to a corona infection is 9,371. According to RKI estimates, around 237,300 people had survived the infection as of Thursday morning.

According to RKI estimates in Germany, based on Wednesday night’s management report, the number of views, or R-value for short, was 1.00 (previous day: 1.04). This means that an infected person infects another person on average. The R value represents the infection rate approximately one and a half weeks earlier.

Additionally, the RKI gives a seven-day R call in its current status report. The value refers to a longer period of time and is therefore less subject to daily fluctuations. According to RKI estimates, this value was 1.06 (previous day: 1.00). It shows the infection process for eight to 16 days.

Bonn virology professor Hendrik Streeck has lowered expectations for an effective corona vaccine at the “Handelsblatt”. When this is ready for the market, it cannot be “predicted”. “I already consider the debates on that rather dubious,” he is quoted as saying. “While an active ingredient can be created quickly, we cannot predict whether or not it will work.” The test phase in particular is “always full of surprises.” According to the newspaper, Streeck warns of both “scaremongering” and “public opinion” in Germany, especially since the pandemic is currently “comparably easy to handle.” “You no longer have to paralyze the whole country.”

The threshold of 2,000 known daily infections was last exceeded in Germany in the second half of August. The peak of new infections reported daily was over 6,000 in late March / early April. Then the number tended to decrease and has increased again since the end of July. The number of new infections detected is also likely to depend on how many people are tested.
