Construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is on the brink. Now the federal government has offered the United States a sum of $ 1 billion to avoid penalties, but is asking for a concession.

The United States threatened Germany with sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in the Baltic Sea. The project could turn into an investment wreck. But according to an investigation by “Zeit”, Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz has made an offer to the United States: one billion euros should induce the United States to rethink and thus save the project.

Scholz made an offer to his American counterpart Steven Mnuchin in early August: Germany was willing to help finance the construction of two special ports for the import of liquefied gas for the United States. At the ports of Brunsbüttel and Wilhelmshaven, the USA wants to import its gas to Germany.

“The possibilities of sanctions are not exhausted”

With the Finance Minister’s offer, the US should get its gas terminals, but in exchange allow the completion of the gas pipeline. “In return, the United States will allow the smooth completion and operation of Nord Stream 2,” reads the written Berlin proposal. “The existing legal options for sanctions are not exhausted.”

The reasons for the dispute include, among other things, that US President Donald Trump wants to sell American gas to Germany. He complains that Germany now wants to import gas from Russia with the construction of Nord Stream 2. Therefore, the companies involved in the construction of the pipeline will be sanctioned. too the port of Sassnitz on Rügen and its mayor they were already threatened by it. On September 24 and 25, the EU heads of state will discuss how to proceed with the construction of the gas pipeline.
