Söder suspends plans for third track in Munich

Plans for the construction of a third runway at Munich airport will not advance in the long term. Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) announced in a speech at the CSU parliamentary group meeting in Munich that the catwalk would no longer arrive during his tenure. Given that Söder is likely to target another legislative term as Prime Minister, plans could be postponed until at least 2028.

Söder: air traffic is changing

In the subsequent press conference, the Prime Minister emphasized that air traffic is fundamentally changing today, precisely because of the Corona crisis. It is currently a challenge to maintain a track in Munich, “much less the second or even a third”.

The third runway was a prospect to increase air traffic for him. But the situation has changed: “We will experience that for a long time we will not even get close to the number of passengers that used to be, much less the increases.” Flight behavior is changing not only because of Corona, but also because of the climate debate. There are far fewer short-haul flights in Germany.

There will be no third clue in the “next eight to ten years”

It is “completely illusory” to believe that a third track is needed now and could be built in the next eight to ten years. Söder added that in view of the economic and ecological credibility and honesty, it was part of his job to clarify this.

Although he is an aviation fanatic, the prime minister said. In the budget, the money for the airports should be available anyway. This is now necessary to “keep airports alive and strong.”
