Union and SPD have reached an agreement in the dispute over the admission of Greek refugees. After the fire in the Moria refugee camp, the federal government wants to take in more people in 1553.

The grand coalition agreed to accept refugees from Greece. According to this, 1553 people over 408 families will be accepted in Germany. These refugees must come to Germany in addition to the 150 planned unaccompanied minors.

Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced it in Berlin. His party had agreed a corresponding regulation with its coalition partner Union. Families with children who have already completed their refugee recognition process in Greece should be taken into account.

Scholz wants a European solution

Faced with the devastating conditions of the past at Camp Moria, Scholz emphasized that there is no agreement if lodgings are operated that do not correspond to the principles that are important in this country. The vice chancellor said it was a “separate contribution” from Germany to support Greece after the fire in the Moria camp.

The next step would be a European agreement to host more refugees; Germany also wants to participate. The now agreed number of refugees to be admitted will not be counted towards an international solution to be agreed for the distribution of refugees to various countries.

Scholz described the coalition agreement as “great, enormous progress.” It should bring relief to Greece in the specific situation.

12,000 homeless refugees

The number of asylum seekers who have already been admitted adds to the number now decided. “53 unaccompanied minor asylum seekers have already been admitted,” said government spokesman Steffen Seibert. In addition, there are 243 children in need of treatment and their main families. This is likely to affect at least 1000 people, of which more than 500 are already in Germany. “The total number of people that Germany is taking over the Greek islands is around 2,750.”

After the Camp Moria fire last week, more than 12,000 refugees are homeless on the island of Lesbos. According to aid organizations, the food and water supply situation is difficult. Last week, the federal government promised to accept unaccompanied minors as part of an action with other European countries. According to this, up to 150 out of every 400 minors should come to Germany.
