As Minister of Development, he repeatedly opposed the line of his own party, the CSU. Development Minister Müller now wants to withdraw from federal politics in 2021. This is reported by various media.

Development Minister Gerd Müller has announced his withdrawal from federal policy. He will no longer run for the Bundestag in 2021, several outlets report unanimously. The 65-year-old reportedly justified the decision with the fact that it was time for a generational change.

For 26 years in the Bundestag

Along with Andreas Scheuer and Horst Seehofer, Müller is one of three CSU ministers in the federal cabinet of Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU). Since CSU chief Markus Söder called for a cabinet shakeup in January, there has also been speculation about Müller’s political future. More recently though, it was deemed safe again, especially as a possible cabinet shakeup is questionable anyway due to the Corona crisis and has at least gotten a long way off.

Müller has been a member of the Bundestag for the Oberallgäu constituency since 1994 and has been a federal minister since December 2013. On development aid, he repeatedly distanced himself from the CSU line with his course, most recently in the debate on the admission of migrants from the burned camp on Lesbos. Müller demanded that 2,000 of the immigrants be transferred to Germany. He was also against the federal government line and especially against his friend from the party, Interior Minister Horst Seehofer.
