Twitter fears that a message from the president of the United States, Donald Trump, could be understood as an encouragement to vote twice in the November elections, and has therefore provided the publication with a warning. The tweet violated guidelines to maintain the integrity of the election, the company said.
Trump’s tweet was directed at citizens of the state of North Carolina. The president encouraged mail-in voters to go to the polling station anyway on voting day to make sure their own votes are being counted correctly. In the event of a problem, citizens must vote again at the site so that no vote is lost, he wrote.
Twitter noted that it is illegal to vote twice in North Carolina.
Facebook: voting by mail is considered trustworthy
Trump also posted his message on Facebook. Facebook provided the message with the information that voting by mail was considered reliable in the past and that no other forecasts were available this year either.
Trump repeatedly criticizes vote-by-mail as particularly prone to fraud, but without providing proof. At the end of last month, the Republican had already encouraged postal voters to try to vote at the electoral college in the November elections, causing a scandal. At the time, Twitter also had a warning ahead of Trump’s post.
In light of the crown pandemic, Democrats surrounding presidential candidate Joe Biden are calling for as many Americans as possible to vote by mail.
Trump’s negative stance may also have something to do with the fact that polls show that Democratic supporters are more inclined to vote by mail. According to a poll conducted by the Pew Institute in late August, 58 percent of voters who want to vote for Biden would prefer votes by mail. This only applies to the 19 percent of voters who want to vote for Trump.
