SSV Ulm has once again surprised in the DFB Cup. The fourth division defeated Erzgebirge Aue two years after their first round victory against Eintracht Frankfurt. The goals for the fans were scored by Tobias Rühle (minute 37) and Felix Higl (89). From the start, it was not clear in Ulm that Aue would play two leagues higher. The hosts were the best team, they missed opportunities to take the lead early on due to Rühle (3rd, 4th).

The 434 spectators admitted to the Danube Stadium saw a one-sided save: Ulm dominated and consequently took the lead through Rühle, who had an easy game after good preparatory work from Angelo Rinaldi. Aue did not appear on offense except for a chance from Philipp Zulechner (29th). The regional league team was also the best team in the second half. Higl made it 2-0 shortly before the end after being denied a goal in the 72nd minute for alleged offside position.

Union almost became the third Bundesliga team and the second and last club from Berlin to be eliminated in the first round of the competition. Urs Fischer’s team was not the best team against Karlsruher SC, but they were able to prevail in extra time. The Bundesliga team started the game better. In the fourth minute, Niko Gießelmann hit the post and Christian Gentner put the margin just above the goal. Just three minutes later, Gießelmann missed a heavy blow from Christian Trimmel.

But that was it for Union in the beginning. The KSC got better and better, but it didn’t create many opportunities. Two minutes before the end of extra time, central defender Niko Schlotterbeck, on loan from Freiburg, scored the winning goal with a lateral pull (118th).
