The demonstration of the left-wing scene in Leipzig “Against Fortress Europe and China’s authoritarian regime” was peaceful on Saturday. The police were on the scene with a large contingent, the protesters had to meet various conditions.

According to the police and the organizers, there were about 600 participants in the street. “Everything was very quiet until the end of the demonstration, we are satisfied,” said police spokeswoman Mandy Heimann.
According to the information, the police wanted to remain present after the elevator was closed to be prepared for any incident that could occur during the night. Last weekend in Leipzig, rioters who were assigned to the left-wing extremist spectrum by the police made the city unsafe for three consecutive nights.
The campaign “Nationalism is not an alternative” called for the demonstration on Saturday. Despite the cancellation of the crown-related EU-China summit, he called for the rally under the slogan “Storm the fortress – break all borders !: Against the fortress of Europe and the authoritarian regime of China.” The summit would take place in Leipzig from September 13 to 15.
The initiators of the protest had announced that they would not increase. Due to the unrest at the demonstrations, especially in the alternative left-wing Connewitz district last week, the police were still present with a large contingent. The Leipzig officers were supported by forces from Bremen, Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. Officials from the Saxon riot police and federal police officers also attended.
The police did not want to provide any information on the number of emergency services. Special vehicles such as water cannons were ready in the city center. Helicopters were also used. Police were also present in parts of the city that were not on the route of the demonstration, for example in Südvorstadt and in the alternative left-wing Connewitz district.
Various conditions were imposed on the demonstration. This includes wearing a face mask and maintaining a distance of 1.50 meters in accordance with the state’s Crown Protection Ordinance.
