ORAustrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has confirmed his government’s stance not to accept any migrant from the burning reception center in Moria. “If we give in to this pressure now, we run the risk of making the same mistakes as in 2015,” the ÖVP politician said in a video message on Facebook on Saturday. During the refugee crisis at the time, the “terrible” images of migrants at the Budapest train station led European politics to give in to pressure. As a result, more people headed to Central Europe, Kurz said. Instead, Austria wants to contribute to humane care on the ground.

Four days after the great fire that destroyed the Moria reception center on the Greek island of Lesbos, the situation on the island remained tense and confused. According to Greek state radio, the first migrants were able to move into a new makeshift tent camp on Saturday afternoon.

On Saturday there were repeated spontaneous demonstrations by migrants in Lesbos, some of which sparked violent clashes with the police. The migrants threw stones, the police used tear gas, as images from Greek television showed. Former residents of the camp also repeatedly lit fires along the street, Greek news agency ANA-MPA reported.

The clashes take place along a road to the island’s capital, Mytilene, where many migrants were stranded after the fire and which has now been cordoned off by police in both directions. Officials tried to prevent people from entering the island’s capital, Mytilene. Instead, they will be staying in a new makeshift tent camp that has been set up at a former military firing range since Friday.
