About 400 people were at the city hall market.

Around 1,000 people demonstrated for refugee rights and against racism on Saturday afternoon at the Rathausmarkt. Meanwhile, the police had spoken of 400 and 700 protesters. Originally, the police expected 4,000 people. Several groups called for it, including the “Seebrücke Hamburg” initiative, the refugee council and the “Lampedusa in Hamburg” group.

Initiators call for more refugees to be accepted

Officially, it’s about rebuilding a tent. Lampedusa refugees had used it as a permanent vigil since 2013 and it was forcibly dismantled by the Hamburg-Mitte district in late March and was not far from the main train station. The tent remained briefly during the demonstration, but after a few minutes it had to be dismantled at the request of the police. After the Moria refugee camp fire, the way refugees were treated on the Greek islands also played an important role in the demonstration. The initiators of the demonstration demand that Germany take in more refugees than planned. A spokesman for the Hamburg dock, for example, called for at least 1,000 refugees from Moria to be brought to Hamburg.

The police had closed some streets around the city hall market for the demonstration. In the afternoon, the police spoke of a smooth course.
