Exit restrictions in France in the spring were marked by very strict rules. If the number of infections increases, many fear that the blockade will be repeated. But this time the government is acting differently.
Faced with the increase in the number of crown, French Prime Minister Jean Castex has appealed to his compatriots to be aware of their responsibility. “The virus is circulating more and more in France,” he warned late Friday after a Defense Council meeting. The future situation depends “on you, on us”. Many French people expected stricter rules, such as regional exit restrictions or restaurant closures, to be imposed. But the government refrained from doing so for the time being.
In some regions, however, stricter measures could be imminent: Castex called on three particularly affected regions to come forward with new measures in the fight against the corona virus on Monday. These are the cities of Marseille and Bordeaux, as well as the overseas region of Guadeloupe. The situation there is “worrying,” Castex said.
The prime minister announced that the quarantine would be reduced from 14 to 7 days. “It is imperative that everyone strictly adhere to this period of isolation, which will be under scrutiny,” he warned.
Much more is being tested
Additionally, a total of 42 departments are now considered risk areas. It used to be just under 30. This means that local authorities have the opportunity to take measures that restrict public life. These areas include, for example, the Paris metropolitan area and much of the Mediterranean coast. The federal government has issued a travel advisory for these and other regions.
France has been severely affected by the pandemic. Just under 10,000 new infections were registered in 24 hours on Thursday. While this was the highest number since the pandemic began. However, as in many other countries, many more tests are carried out than in spring.
Large gatherings are currently prohibited. In some cities like Paris, masks are a must in public places and even on the streets. The use of intensive care beds has recently increased again in some regions, but remains low throughout the country. According to doctors, the Covid-19 courses are currently less severe than in spring.
Castex is currently in quarantine at its official headquarters in Matignon in Paris. Last weekend, he took a seat in Tour de France boss Christian Prudhomme’s car on the Pyrenees stage. This later tested positive for the coronavirus. Castex has reportedly tested negative. In the press release, however, strict security rules were applied.
