The cabinet has decided on a new crown regulation for Rhineland-Palatinate. Many rules for cinemas and theaters, for example, were relaxed. But it will be a special campaign for Mardi Gras.

Prime Minister Malu Dreyer (SPD) presented the new rules on Friday night. It is the 11th Crown Control Ordinance. It will be applied from next Wednesday. Until then, the old regulations will remain in force.

For many industries, the new regulation brings relaxation:

  • Events in closed rooms: So far, only a maximum of 150 people have been allowed to participate; in the future, 250 people will be allowed.
  • Outdoor events: 500 people are allowed in the future, according to the well-known hygiene and distance rules.
  • Cinemas / theaters and other events with fixed seats and rows of chairs: instead of the previous distance of 1.50 meters, it is now sufficient if the adjacent seat and the seats in front of and behind it remain free.
  • Events in stadiums or large halls: If there are fixed grandstand capacities like at the Nürburgring or at the Mainz 05 or 1. FC Kaiserslautern stadiums, then up to ten percent of the seats can be filled with a hygiene concept.
  • Retail trade: More people are allowed to shop in stores. Instead of the previous ten, the benchmark is now five square meters of retail space per person. This means that twice as many people are allowed in the tents.

Possibility of Christmas markets

Large events where contact tracing and compliance with hygiene regulations are not possible are still prohibited. Christmas markets should be allowed, but in a slightly different way. For example, for a market to be held in a demarcated area or the stalls are distributed throughout the city.

The idea of the Christmas town brings a Christmas feeling as the season darkens despite the distance and the everyday mask, said Mainz Mayor Michael Ebling (SPD), who is also chairman of the Rhineland-Palatinate City Council.

Start of Mardi Gras allowed

Foolish centers in Rhineland-Palatinate may on 11.11. celebrate the start of the carnival. Events on this day are possible in accordance with existing Corona regulations, said the Prime Minister. Ebling added that the “Carnival proclamation” would be publicly visible even without a gathering of people.

Mardi Gras special

Looking ahead to Carnival, Dreyer made it clear again that this year would be different than usual. It is inconceivable for people to sing and sway together for four to six hours in an enclosed space, the SPD politician said Friday morning after a conversation with representatives of the carnival. “This Carnival cannot be carried out in this way. That is simply impossible,” he said at the press conference. Carnival should break new ground, for example with meetings via live broadcast.
