Martin Schulz, the SPD candidate for chancellor in the 2017 federal elections and former head of the Social Democrats, is supposed to become the head of the party-affiliated Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, replacing Kurt Beck. He reported on the news portal “The Pioneer,” citing anonymous sources in the party.
Beck had proposed the former SPD candidate for chancellor in a letter to the foundation’s board members as his successor and noted that this had also been discussed with the party leadership.
According to the report, Schulz will run as director of the foundation in October.
A small group of high-ranking Social Democrats gave the staff the green light at an internal meeting last Friday in Berlin, he said.
