Formula 1, Monza Grand Prix – Pierre Gasly triumphs at Monza – Formula 1

Pierre Gasly couldn’t believe his luck. The Alpha Tauri driver claimed victory in the Italian Grand Prix ahead of Carlos Sainz (McLaren) and Lance Stroll (Racing Point). A trio that no one would have expected before the race. “I can’t believe all this. Words fail me. This team gave me the opportunity in Formula 1. I can only thank everyone,” said the 24-year-old Frenchman. “This is absolute insanity.”

Gasly held his ground at the end, was able to fend off Sainz’s attacks on the final lap and saved his narrow lead over the finish line. A surprising result, which was mainly due to the many mistakes and inadequacies of the competition.

Hamilton and Bottas with serious errors

Because from the start, Lewis Hamilton stepped away from the competition in his Mercedes car. It could have been a classic win from start to finish for the Englishman, but the strange course of the race did not allow it. Hamilton received a ten-second penalty for illegally entering the closed pit lane.

The reason: Kevin Magnussen’s Haas race car had to be pushed to the pits after 20 laps because a defect made it impossible to continue driving. The well was then plugged, which the Mercedes team apparently missed. The competition took advantage of this rare oversight on Mercedes’ part.

Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas, unlike the 35-year-old, struggled early and fell to sixth place. It would have been Bottas’s big chance to win, which he ruined with a messy start.

Vettel and Leclerc leave early

This Italian Grand Prix, Ferrari’s 999th Formula 1 race, will go down in the history of the proud Italian racing team as a great disaster. For the first time since 1984, no Ferrari driver was in the top ten at Monza at the start. Charles Leclerc started from 13th place, Sebastian Vettel even from 17th place.

And the debacle should continue for both drivers. On lap seven, Vettel finished again. A broken brake line ended Vettel’s dreams. “The rear brake line indicated a few laps earlier. It was very hot,” Vettel said. “It always gets worse. The situation is not easy for me, but it is not easy for the whole team either.”

After 25 laps, the race for Leclerc was over. At the Parabolica, the 22-year-old Monegasse lost control of his car and sped down almost without braking against the wall of the tire on the side. After the violent accident, Leclerc was able to independently leave his car and get to safety. “That was my mistake, I lost the car,” Leclerc said later.

Also Verstappen out

This accident had far-reaching consequences: after that, the race was stopped for almost half an hour so that the road could be cleaned and the boards restored.

At the restart on lap 28, Hamilton held the lead, but then immediately pitted, served his sentence and then lined up last on the field. In the end, Hamilton finished in seventh place after his career to catch up.

Pierre Gasly (Alpha Tauri) took the lead ahead of Carlos Sainz (McLaren) and Lance Stroll (Racing Point).

And not only Ferrari and Mercedes had a black day. Max Verstappen also had to park his Red Bull car after 31 laps due to a technical defect. After that, the race died down. Nothing should change at the top, and the extremely unexpected result of the race remained.
