Around 1:30 am, several people stopped a streetcar and sprayed it with graffiti. They built barricades and set fire to garbage cans and a shopping cart. The roughly 150 people involved withdrew to adjacent side streets after emergency services arrived, police said.
The police helicopter was in the air until the early hours of the morning to provide live images of the construction of barricades at various locations in Connewitz, as well as fires and road traffic disruptions.
For the third consecutive night of riots, the Leipzig police had entered the night with a large contingent of several hundred riot police. Support came from the Thuringian Federal Police and emergency services. The trigger for the demonstrations is the evacuation of an occupied house.
