meIn Leipzig, violent riots broke out during a spontaneous demonstration against the eviction of an occupied house on Friday night. According to eyewitness reports, the police officers were thrown out of a group of around 100 masked people with cobblestones and firecrackers. In some cases, garbage cans were also set ablaze and several trams were forced to stop by road barricades. The police used tear gas.

Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung condemned the riots “in the strongest terms.” The SPD politician explained that the debate on affordable housing had suffered a serious setback with occupations and violent clashes. “You don’t create a living space by attacking police officers and setting fire to barricades.” The important housing debate is becoming much more difficult now, because now lost confidence must be regained.

Violent riots broke out in the city on Thursday, in which several policemen were injured. The background is the evacuation of an occupied house in eastern Leipzig.

Throughout the weekend there is the threat of further riots in Leipzig in the course of the eviction of the house. Various groups have called events on the theme of gentrification, urban warfare, networking, liberation from capitalism and capital through Sunday in the alternative left-wing Connewitz district.
