A young mother is said to have killed five of her children in Solingen and then tried to take her own life. Investigators are now announcing the first details of the possible motive. There are also initial findings on the cause of death for children.

The five Solingen children found dead are believed to have suffocated, according to investigators. There are also indications that they were drugged, said prosecutor Heribert Kaune-Gebhardt in Solingen, without giving details. That was the result of the autopsy of the bodies. Additionally, no signs of sharp or forceful violence were found at the crime scene.

The five children, according to investigators, three girls aged 18 months, two and three years and two boys aged six and eight, were found dead in an apartment in Solingen on Thursday. The 27-year-old mother is suspected of killing her. The woman confessed to her own mother’s act in a WhatsApp chat and threw herself in front of a train in nearby Düsseldorf. She survived seriously injured. Four of the dead children are from the current husband. Two sons come from their mother’s previous relationships. Neither of the three parents is currently a suspect.

A judge has issued an arrest warrant for the mother. That’s what Kaune-Gebhardt said. The prosecutor had requested an arrest warrant for five murders. It is not yet known if the 27-year-old will be in a correctional hospital. However, following the alleged suicide attempt, the 27-year-old is not considered questionable or liable to arrest.

Investigators assume the mother’s motive is emotionally overwhelming, said homicide squad chief Marcel Maierhofer. The reason for this could have been her broken marriage. The mother and father of four children have been separated for a year. During this time, there were said to have been numerous disputes, including a burglary report against the father of four and two rescue missions to the apartment.
