Another black man was shot and killed by police in the United States. As the chief of police of the US capital, Washington, Peter Newsham, said at a press conference, a police officer shot the fleeing man during a vehicle check on Wednesday (local time). The dead man is said to be 18-year-old Deon Kay from Washington.

Officers received a tip that there were guns in a car in southern Washington, Newsham said. When the police approached the vehicle, some of the vehicle’s occupants fled on foot.

“During the chase, one of the suspects waved a gun,” said a statement from the Metropolitan Police Department. An officer shot and hit the suspect once, according to the police version. Attached to the statement was a photo of a weapon that Kay is said to have carried with him. Another man was arrested, it is said that he too had a gun.

Later, Kay was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. According to the Washington Post, Deon Kay lived with his mother near the crime scene. Natasha Kay said the police had not given her all the details of what happened.

According to Councilmember Trayon White, the family is now waiting for the video recordings to be evaluated. “We want to know what the body camera recordings show. We want to know if he escaped, why he was shot,” White told Wusa9 broadcaster.

Local Black Lives Matter activists called for protests. Late at night, dozens of protesters clashed with the police in front of a police station.

In the United States, since the death of African American George Floyd in a brutal police raid in Minneapolis in late May, there have been protests against police violence and racism in many cities. The demonstrations were fueled by fatal shooting by police at the Black Dijon Kizzee on Monday in Los Angeles. According to police, the African American had fled and dropped a bundle of clothing with a pistol in it.
