Approximately 30 years after the violent death of a young woman in the Ilm district, the police have found a suspect. The Erfurt prosecutor’s office and the Gotha criminal police are targeting a 78-year-old man from the Ilmenau area.

Searches in the Ilmenau district of Manebach

As police announced Wednesday morning, the man is suspected of murdering Cornelia G., then 19, nearly 30 years ago. Therefore, the police moved to the Ilmenau district of Manebach on Wednesday with a large contingent. In addition to the suspect’s home, his property is also searched.

Cornelia G. found dead in the forest near Ilmenau

The young woman was found in December 1990 in a forest near Ilmenau. Investigations revealed that she was allegedly raped and later killed with multiple knife wounds. The search for the culprit was unsuccessful at the time. Since murder is not prohibited by law, the unsolved case has been raised over and over again. In 2018, an important note followed: a woman reported to the police that she had also been raped in Ilmenau in 1990.

This led to new investigations that were also related to public relations work: in March this year, the police described the perpetrator in detail on the TV show “Aktenzeichen XY” and publicly requested more information.
