The bomb was found during exploration work at a water plant site.

During exploratory work at the site of a water supply plant in Hamburg’s Neugraben-Fischbek district, a WWII plane bomb was discovered on Monday. A spokesman for the fire department said it was a 250 kilogram German bomb. During the night, the bomb could be defused.

Complicated task for the defuser

It was a complicated mission for the munitions disposal service. According to the fire department, German aircraft bombs are quite rare in Hamburg. They differ in design from British or American rags, which are more commonly found in the city. The detonators are installed differently on the German model and are protected by an expansion lock. Because the deactivation tool had to be adjusted, the operation lasted until 3 am

Neugraben-Fischbek: successful disposal of bombs

NDR 90.3

A World War II plane bomb was defused in the Neugraben-Fischbek district of Hamburg overnight. The German fraud was found during construction work. Finn Kessler reports.

Residents can return

The approximately 600 residents who had to leave the danger zone can return to their homes. The German bomb was likely on a pilot’s plane on the way home who failed to land with an active bomb on board. That’s probably why it was ruled out, says fire department spokesman Jan-Ole Unger.

That’s what it’s about: rags
