Steinmeier receives deputy police officers at Bellevue Palace

After the Corona demonstrations in Berlin over the weekend, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier thanked the police for their commitment. On behalf of all the officers who were on duty over the weekend, the federal president invited and honored several police officers at Bellevue Palace. The thousands of police officers defended the law and the law on Saturday “at high personal risk and with great professionalism,” Steinmeier said. The team spirit of the police heroes was evident when they entered the Golden Book.

This is how the police signed the Golden Book

The police made sure that tens of thousands of people could exercise their basic right to freedom of expression and assembly. “You showed that our constitutional state works with efficiency and courage, but just as moderate and appropriate,” the federal president told the police present.

In addition, Steinmeier received Jana Andresen and Eicke Bünsow from Einsatzhundschaft and Clemens Ritter from the Federal Police. They all signed the Golden Book during the visit, and there too they showed greatness. Police heroes signed on behalf of their units. Officials said they would like their work to have wider acceptance than it currently is.

Federal President Steinmeier criticizes “anti-democratic agitation”

Steinmeier strongly condemned the occupation of the stairs of the Reichstag building. Most of the right-wing protesters had broken a cordon and were climbing the stairs before the police could drive them back. “Reich flags on the steps of the freely elected German parliament, the heart of our democracy, that is not only despicable, but, in view of the history of this place, it is absolutely unbearable,” said the federal president. “We do not tolerate any anti-democratic agitation and any degradation of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Bundestag.”

Steinmeier also emphasized that defending democracy in Germany is not just the job of the police. “It is the task and duty of civil society as a whole, and of each individual. We must confront the enemies of our democracy in an active, decisive and courageous way.”
